Definition: Romanticism: a movement in art and literature mainly in the 19th Century. It is a style of writing that requires you to write more creatively. This type of writing uses no particular format. They would write with emotions and energy. The writing has more feeling than other styles like the neoclassicism period. It had started in western europe in the end of the 18th century.
Characteristics: The Characteristics of the Romanticism Era were bold and exotic, over the restraints from society. People were imaginative, unique and eccentric. In the artwork and pieces of literature, symbolism is often used in a way to express the inexpressible. Artists were often inspired by their surroundings, such as nature. Art and literature were commonly used as a refuge from civilization. Artists also used their emotions in their art work. These kinds of expressions differ from Neoclassicism because the work is not as socially conscious. Reason is replaced with imagination and personal opinion and expression stand out.
Time Period: There is a dispute between the start of the romantic period however the end is unanimously agreed on as being 1861 with the begining of the Civil War.
